Charles Henry Gifford (American 1839 - 1904) - Seascape

A luminist painter active from 1865 until the end of the century. During the 1850s he was influenced by the work of New Bedford artists A. Bierstadt, Wm. Bradford, A. van Beest, and Robert S. Gifford (apparently no relation). He served in the Civil War, 1862-64, and embarked on his artistic career in 1865. In 1868, he established a studio in New Bedford and painted SE New England shore scenes in Cuttyhunk, the Elizabeth Islands, and Nantucket, as well as in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. Beginning in 1874, he found success in selling his paintings, most of which are no larger than 9 x 14". In 1879, he traveled to Ireland, Scotland, and London.
