Signed & Hand Painted Portrait Miniature on vellum encased in glass and surrounded by salmon toned French Guilloche Enamel. Set in gilt bronze frame with French embellishments in relief. Metal ribbon bow design tops portrait. Other side depicts beveled mirror , chip to mirror from underside. Possibly antique. Weighted piece. Measures 6.5 x 4.25 in. About: Portrait miniatures first appeared in European royal courts in the 16th century. The reign of Queen Elizabeth I- the 18th c. their popularity was widespread amongst the aristocracy. Miniatures were particularly sought after by soldiers and sailors who wanted to leave their loved ones with a likeness to cherish in their absence. During 16th & 17th c. these works of art were referred to as ‘limnings, ‘ portraits on vellum laid onto a piece of card. Not inspected outside of glass.
