Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Mahakam River, Dayak peoples, Bahau group, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. An interesting example of a figure known as a hampatong (literally "figure" or "statue") depicting an abstract anthropomorphic figure of a sizable form. The figure stands with delineated legs atop an integral hemispherical plinth and presents his slender, nude body and protruding phallus to the viewer. Both arms are bent and placed atop each thigh, and the sloped shoulders taper inward to form the neck. The enormous head bears stylized features such as concave, discoid eyes, a slender nose, a downcast mouth with bared teeth, and tall, flaming ears with drooping ear lobes, all beneath a domed skull cap. The hampatong (also hempatong, empatung, tempatong, or kepatong) traditionally portray ancestors and other supernatural guardians of the Dayak religious system, and each sculptural effigy is believed to possess its own meaning and function. Size: 5.1" W x 18.7" H (13 cm x 47.5 cm)
