Item Details
Description
Southeast Asia, Vietnam, Anamese (sometimes Annamese), ca. 15th to 17th century CE. This is a fabulous group of 6 petite Anamese porcelain jarlets, discovered in shipwreck, likely from the famous Hoi An Hoard. Each is a petite, rounded vessel with a ring foot and short lip. The white glazed body of 5 have a floral or bird patterns and a matte surface, while the one with the deer motif has a shinier finish. These pieces rested at the bottom of the ocean for hundreds of years before discovery by fishermen. Five of these jars each have clear evidence of marine activity- the smallest jar even contains 2 shells from a clam that may have grown inside the vessel, becoming too large to exit the narrow opening and is now trapped inside! The "Hoi An Hoard" was found off the coast of central Vietnam in the South China Sea in the 1990s and excavated in 1999. When the ship went down, it was carrying a massive cargo of Vietnamese ceramics - over 250,000 unique pieces! Size of largest: 2.75" Diameter x 2.25" H (7 cm x 5.7 cm)

Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010
