Description
One U.S. Civil War era 1861-S twenty dollar gold coin featuring on the obverse the bust of Lady Liberty encircled by 13 stars with the year beneath. The reverse with a spread-winged eagle with a halo of stars surrounded by "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TWENTY D." and the mint mark below the eagle.

Designed by James Barton Longacre (American, 1794-1869). Longacre was the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint until his death. His design and the production of the first double eagle coins coincided with the 1849 California Gold Rush. This design was the precursor for the $20 Saint-Gaudens double eagle.

Provenance: Property from the distinguished collection of Mr. James Lee Soffer, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
