Description
For your consideration in this lot is “American: The Life Story of a Great Indian, Plenty-coups, Chief of the Crows” by Frank Bird Linderman. This first edition 1930 book is hard to find. The book is bound in tan cloth with a red thunderbird symbol on the cover. The paper has some foxing but is in good condition. There is wear to the cover and spine. The book is illustrated by H.M. Stoops. Frank Bird Linderman (September 25, 1869 – May 12, 1938) was a Montana writer, politician, Native American ally and ethnographer. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he went West as a young man and fell in love with life on the Montana frontier. While working as a trapper for several years, he lived with the Salish and Blackfeet tribes, learning their cultures. He later became an advocate for them and for other northern Plains Indians. Linderman wrote about their cultures and worked to help them survive pressure from European Americans. He supported establishment of the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation in 1916 in Montana for landless Ojibwe (Chippewa) and Cree and continued as an advocate for Native Americans to his death. One of his most important works was the biographies of Plenty Coups. He interviewed him in sign language over the course of several weeks. He shaped his notes into a book that he presented as an autobiography. The book measures 8 3/8" x 1 1/2" x 6".
