Heintz Art Metal
From Worthpoint.com and written by Julian Traas:"The Heintz Art Metal Shop, Buffalo, New York HistoryIn 1875, Otto Heintz was born in Buffalo, New York, to a family of jewelers. Heintz purchased a small manufacturing company in 1902, rebranding it the Arts Crafts Shop, from which he began designing and crafting copper wares adorned with colored enamel. He would go on to contribute metalwork to gift shops and department stores throughout the American Northeast from 1906 to 1930.In the heyday of the American Arts and Crafts movement, “brown metal”—with hues ranging from tarnished penny to well-worn leather—was all the rage. Heintz differentiated himself, in certain ways, from the more traditional adherents to the movement. For example, he gradually replaced his shop’s hand-hammered aesthetic with machine-shaped forms sporting sophisticated patinas (factory finishes). Contrary to the Arts and Crafts trend of using copper, he favored bronze with a silver overlay. He began this practice in 1906, the year he renamed the company the Heintz Art Metal Shop.

As the years wore on, the variety and depth of Heintzs techniques continued to grow. Adding to his enviable chocolate brown, he sold wares colored red, green, and even brown-gold. By 1906, he was working with painted enamel flourishes. He expanded his repertoire still further in 1912, when he experimented with electroplated French grey tones. That same year, he patented his solderless method for the application of silver to bronze. In the 1920s, he added plated silver and gold to his arsenal. Eventually, he would be granted two more patents.

When Heintz passed away unexpectedly in 1918, he took with him the secret of his proprietary chemical formula for achieving the dark chocolate patina on his metalworks. To compound the chaos, some of his employees, including sales manager Fred Smith, jumped ship and established their own firm--Smith Metal Arts Co. The loss of the founder, the new competition, and the hardships of the Great Depression all conspired to snuff out Heintz Art Metal Shop, which at last closed its doors on February 11, 1930."
