Description
Pr. Walnut side chairs attr. to William Savery in the Queen Anne style, the serpentine crest rails with flared ears over vasiform splats, the crest and stiles outline with incised lines, trapezoid shaped seats, through tenons to the back legs, shaped front seat rails and cabriole front legs terminating in paneled trifid feet. This pair is almost surely by the same hand as the previously illustrated labeled pair of William Savery chairs with almost identical crest rails, splats and general construction, the difference being in the details of the seat rails and the paneling of the trifid feet being a little shorter. Note: On one of these chairs, the lowers section of all four legs have been repaired. Provenance: From the Lippincott/Smith family of Salem, New Jersey. 40"H x 20"W x 16.5"D, Circa - 1740-1780. Other pieces of documented Savery furniture and other early American furniture, from this same estate, are documented in the "Blue Book of Philadelphia Furniture".
