Description
Earl of Ormond - A pair of George III / Elizabeth II sterling silver candelabra, the candlesticks Birmingham 1807 by Matthew Boulton Circular bases with a gadrooned edge leading to a domed fluted centre below tapering cylindrical columns with fluted capitals. The three-light branches London 1958, reeded arms with gadrooned drip pans and removable gadrooned circular sconces. Each branch fitted with a removable central flame finial. The filled bases engraved dual coat of arms, one a quartered coat of arms encircled in a badge of honour, between supporters of a falcon and a male griffin, above the motto Comme je Trouve, all surmounted by an Earl’s coronet. The obverse with two quartered coat of arms accollé, the sinister with a quartered coat of arms upon an escutcheon of pretence, both with badges of honour between supporters within a robe of estate, with the motto below all surmounted by a helm with an Earl’s coronet. Stamped scratch weights to each 14:17 and 14:12. Each fully marked to the bases. (2) Height – 45.4 cm / 17.8 inches Weighable silver – 2152 grams / 69.19 ozt The arms are for Walter quartering Butler quartering Carrick quartering Fitzgerald with Clarke quartering others on an escutcheon of pretence For Walter Butler, 1st Marquess of Ormonde, (1770 – 1820) who married Anna Maria Catherine Clarke (1785-1817), daughter of Joseph Hart Pryce Clarke (d. c.1810) and Sarah Clarke (d.c. 1801), on 17 March 1805. She was the heiress, as niece, to Godfrey Bagnall Clarke (1742-1774), of Sutton Scarsdale Hall. He the son of John Butler, 17th Earl of Ormonde (1740-1795) and Frances Susan Elizabeth Wandesford (1754-1830) only daughter and heiress of John Wandesford, 1st Earl Wandesford (1725-1784), by his wife Agnes Elizabeth Southwell (1730-1781), daughter and heiress of John Southwell, of Enniscouch, co. Limerick. Walter was made the 1st Marquess of Ormonde in January 1816. The Earldoms of Ormonde and Ossory were held by the 1st Marquess of Ormonde from Jan 1816 until his death on 10 Aug 1820, when the Marquessate of Ormonde became extinct and the Earldoms of Ormonde and Ossory passed to his brother, James Wandesford Butler, 1st Marquess of Ormonde (1774 – 1838) who was made Marquess of Ormonde of the second creation in 1825.
