Monden Kogyoku (Japanese, b. 1916), Flower of Wave
Heisei era (1989-2019), Madake bamboo, artist's signature inscribed on basket, inscribed interior of box lid with artist's seal, yellow cloth impressed with artist's red seal.
10 1/2 x 8 x 12 in.
Kogyoku, which means “bamboo grove treasure,” is Monden’s artistic name, given to him when he was 21, a few short years after he began making bamboo baskets. His long and prestigious career has been marked with numerous honors, known for his unique style and vision in creating undulating sculptural work using the “rolling-weave” (uneri ami) technique. Monden became a full member of the Japan Craft Arts Exhibition in 1991, was an active leader in his prefecture, a judge for many regional exhibitions, and a teacher at the community college in Fukuyama City. His work is included in collections at the Denver Art Museum, San Francisco Asian Art Museum, and Mint Museum in Charlotte, NC.
