Description
I believe this dates to the last quarter of the 18th century. Just the sword no scabbard. The straight quadrangular blade is etched with PARIS and ANO 1648, and another word I cannot decipher, along with an etched rendering of a standing figure holding a sword. There is also a tiny banner with an etched design that may be a word. See the last three photos. The date of 1648 is likely commemorating an earlier military event, probably the Battle of Lens which was a French victory in the last battle of The 30 Years War. The thick brass guard is heart shaped and substantial. The pommel is large and globe shaped. The knuckle guard is secured to the pommel with a substantial brass screw. Much more beefy than most French swords, which are frequently on the -delicate- side. The grip is wrapped in heavy wire. It was meant for business, not show. About the size of a Civil War NCO sword. Very solid and not messed with nor worked-on. Fresh to the market. Maybe American Revolutionary War era... Certainly pre Napoleonic. Western European for sure.
