Description
A Thangka Depicting Panjarnata Mahakala
Tibet, circa 19th century
Distemper on cloth
Painted area is 29 1/2 in x 21 1/2 in
This is an example of a shakya lineage painting. Panjarnata Mahakala, the lord of the Pavilion stand at the center holding a Kartika in his right hand and Kapala in the left, with a large Ghandi stick across his arms held at the bends of the elbows. Panjarnata Mahakala stands surrounded by his retinue of devas Bhutadamara Vajrapani at the left and Vajradhara on the right, and surrounded by other wrathful deities with lineage figures.
The wrathful figure Panjarnata Mahakala, derived form the Vajrapanjara tantra, is the special protector of the Hevajra Tantra. He was also considered as the special protector of Nalanda University in Bihar, as is evidenced by the wooden Ghandi across his forearms.
Mounted on the original silk brocade border with two beautiful side by side antique Tibetan silver Tangto.
From the Proponance Antique show in New York in 1990.
