A Thangka Painting Depicting a Buddhist Deity, Sitatapatra (Dug Kar Mo)
Tibet, circa 17th century
Distemper on cloth
19.5 in x 15.75 in
One thousand heads, arms and eyes astride at center, backed by an aureole of flames with a parasol one of the vajra crown protuberance of the Buddha. The main face in white showing a slightly fierce expression, with 1000 heads radiating outwards to the right, left and above. Each face has three eyes, adorned with gold and jeweled earrings. The 500 legs on the left side are extended above worldly deities and a host of animals and the legs on the right are bent and pressed down on all the worldly troubles, demons and animals. At top right is Buddha Shakyamuni and left is a Lama.
