Description
Alabama, 1928-2019
Depicts a woman wearing a black brimmed hat and polychromatic patterned dress complete with arm tassels reaching outwards in admiration of her ring. Toney was a self taught artist who started off working on a farm with his father and had a brief stint working in a cotton mill where he was fired for drawing an unflattering depiction of his boss. Toney supported himself by plowing fields for Butch Anthony's family, the founder of the Museum of Wonder and the Museum of Wonder Drive-Thru Museum as well as the owner of the Possum Trot auction house. When plowing the fields belonging to the Anthony's, he dug up a turnip that he determined had a face and created a colored pencil image of it before giving it to Butch Anthony to sell. This instance started Toney's long and prolific career.
