New York. City & County of Albany. February 17, 1776 (Same date as the Third Continental Congress Issued notes). Five Eighths of a Spanish Milled Dollar / Five Shillings Dual-denominated. PCGS graded Very Fine-20.
Fr. NY-1845. A 1776 dated Revolutionary War series "Dual-denomination" Demand note valued at Five Eighths of a Spanish Milled Dollar, also denominated as Five Shillings, the highest denomination in the series. Payable on Demand... "in CONTINENTAL CURRENCY". This Uniface printed note has some soiling from circulation, its holder stating center split repaired, pinholes, and small edge splits. All text is readable with signatures by Jacob Cuyler and John T. Beeckman (in light red) present. This note's blank reverse is clean. Its laid period paper margins are fully even providing centering to its designs. This rarity is valued in the current (2008) 5th Edition of Newman at the top listed grade "Fine" at $3,000. In our EAHA Auction of July 24, 2021 we offered Lot 83, a cleaner and brighter 5s note graded (raw) Very Fine, which sold for $2,040. Notes on this mutual New York - Continental Currency related February 17, 1776 series are typically only found in advanced collections. Listed as "Rare" in the Friedberg Paper Money reference.
