Pass no. 4979, issued for 1898 to JE Slater, traveling auditor for LS&MS Railway. Signed by the president, William Seward Webb. Ornate logo with wings inside of the "P" of Palace. Black print on cardstock. Hamilton Bank Note Co., New York. Light wear. This company, formed in 1866, was a major competitor to the Pullman's Palace Car Co.. Originally known as the New York Central Sleeping Car Co., but it was renamed the Wagner Palace Car Co. in 1886 after its deceased founder, Webster Wagner. Controlled by Cornelius Vanderbilt interests and run by William Seward Webb, a Vanderbilt son-in-law.
