Wilkie COLLINS (1824-1889). The Woman in White: a Novel. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1860. Octavo (9 ¼ x 5 /34in). Pp. [1-]6-260, [i-iv] including 2pp. ads at the beginning and 4 pp. at the end. Wood-engraved illustrations. (Overall light toning, occasional light staining, some small repairs). Original brown cloth, covers blocked in blind, the flat spine lettered in gilt, with oxidized silver lady blocked in lower half of spine: a variant without the Harper & Brothers ‘HB’ monogram blocked in blind on the covers (rubbing to head and foot of spine and extremities, small splits to joints). First American Edition, variant state of the publisher’s binding, second state with first page of ads. at the rear headed “By Miss Mulock” and listing eleven titles. The 2nd page advertising “The Mill on the Floss”. The advertisement leaf at beginning dated August 1860. The US first edition of Collins's mystery-detective novel, preceding the English edition by a month. A Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone. Cf. Gasson, p. 160; cf. Sadleir 605 & 605a; cf. Wolff 1377.
