Item Details
Description
There is some confusion over this artist’s dates. From what I have found, there was a Robert Roe (1793-1880), who created a small dynasty of artists that includes the creator of this dog portrait, Robert Henry Roe (1823-1905). A sibling of the younger one was Colin Graeme (sometimes Graeham) Roe, another of one of my favorite animal painters. Clarence, Fred, Robert Ernest and Herbert Percy were other brothers who were also all artists. Most painted sporting and animal subjects, including our Robert Henry.; In this wonderful portrait, the dog is shown facing right, away from the artist, perhaps a bit bored. Roe used short brush strokes to create the portrait. There is a regal quality to the piece, reflecting the noble qualities of the breed. The dark teal-blue background harmonizes well with the colors of the dog.; On the back of the panel on which it is painted is an original label that reads: “This head of a Bloodhound was painted by myself in exactly half an hour. ?? purchased by Mrs. Mealand(?) of Pre(??) St., London Road, Leicester, Robt. Henry Roe.; It is wonderfully housed in its original, ornate wood and gesso gilded frame. The gesso work is fabulous, with four decorative rows along with several plainer rows. The frame has a wide gilded slip. All this original exceptional work helps make this an extraordinary portrait painting.; The painting is in excellent condition. The heavy, ornate gilded frame is also in excellent condition, but there is a slight loss of gesso work on the lower-right corner edge as well as minor losses in the other corners. There is a small loss of plain gesso work in the lower-right corner. However, none of these small losses distract from enjoying this piece or the decorative quality of this fine painting.; It measures 12 inches wide by 13 inches high, including the frame.
