Description
Bertha Evelyn Clausen Jaques
(American, 1863-1941)
Cedar with Fruit, 1915
cyanotype
unsigned
titled verso
inscribed Medfield, Mass., 1915
16 5/8" x 7 7/8"
Catalog Note:
Bertha Evelyn Clausen Jaques was a prolific etcher and cyanotype photographer during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when etching was considered out of style in America. Her subjects included botanical prints and landscapes. Both were typical for female artists of the time who had limited or no access to the subjects of their male counterparts.
Jaques is best known for her prints of wildflowers and ferns, which grew out of a desire to present something that was not only beautiful to behold, but also to promote wildflower preservation. She approached both subjects atypically. Her botanical prints are scientifically precise and removed from context or background.
