Description
**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Cambodia or Northern Thailand, Khmer Empire (Angkor culture), ca. 12th to 14th century CE. This is a beautiful stoneware jar or incense burner of an unusual form with a tall, conical base and bulbous bowl with a lid. The lid has a narrow nozzle or vertical spout for emitting the incense. The conical base is also hollow, the exterior is molded with raised banding from the base to the neck. The piece is covered with an attractive dark brown and black glaze that is slightly reflective. The elongated and impressive tapering tower is modeled after a Buddhist stupa. Size: 5.25" Diameter x 15.5" H (13.3 cm x 39.4 cm)

Please note this vase is from the collection of Arthur Jolliffe (1905 to 1984), a prolific American collector of Asian artifacts. Jolliffe began collecting during World War II while overseas as a Major in the US army and while under General Douglas MacArthur in the Central Purchasing offices in China and Japan. Upon his return to the USA in 1950, Jolliffe opened a shop located in Denver Colorado known as "Jolliffe Oriental Galleries," and within a decade he had acquired the reputation as an expert and well-respected Asian antiquity dealer. Reputedly he acquired artifacts for and financially contributed to the Denver Art Museum - Please see the Denver Art Museum's website and provenance for: "Water Dropper" accession number: 1971.20, "Ewer" accession number 1979.103, and "Devi" accession number: 1983.15.

Condition
Stable fissure on the interior of lid. Surface abrasions and chips to body and rim of base, but stable and well preserved. Some fading of black glaze and mottled brown areas, but overall excellent condition.
