Item Details
Description
**First Time At Auction**

East Asia, Japan, late Edo to early Meiji Period, ca. second half of the 19th century CE. A lovely example of a Hagi ware tea bottle, so named based on the town of Hagi in Yamaguchi Prefecture where this style originated. The spherical bottle presents with a planar base, a series of gentle horizontal ribs along the body, a sizable indentation on the other side, a pair of petite lug handles, and an incised wavy pattern along one shoulder. The entire bottle exhibits a lustrous layer of glaze, though the neck and 1 side of the shoulder are covered in a thick, uneven layer of white glaze. Hagi ware vessels are renowned for their earthen hues, minimalist aesthetic, and the extensive craquelure - known as kan-nyuu (or "crazing") - as shown here. The bottle is topped with a hand-carved whale ivory lid, and accompanying the bottle is a wooden box with blue-and-white cotton straps. Size (bottle): 2.5" W x 3.125" H (6.4 cm x 7.9 cm); (box): 3.25" L x 3.25" W x 4.4" H (8.3 cm x 8.3 cm x 11.2 cm)
