Item Details
Description
Description: REDOUTE, Pierre-Joseph (1759-1840) Lilium Tigrinum bis., Plate 475.
Stipple engraving with original hand color from Les Liliacees.
Paris, 1802-1816.
22 ½” x 14 ½” sheet.

Les Liliacees is important work of Redoute's art: it is his largest single work; it depicts specimens of the liliacee family, often serving as the first known depictions of these specimens; it contains Redoute's most extensive use of stipple-engraving, a technique which he pioneered in France. Redoute published Les Liliacees under his own name, but the work owes much to the patronage of Empress of the french Josephine Bonaparte and first wife of Napoleon. The association began in 1798, when Redoute painted watercolors for the Empress's bedroom at Chateau de Malmaison and contributed to the record of the plants in the extensive gardens found there, which were later published in Ventenat's Jardin de la Malmaison and Description des Plantes Rares Cultivees au Jardin de Malmaison.

Stipple engraving and color printing give engravings their luminous quality. Stippling is an etching process that employs a pattern of dots of various sizes and densities across the image, instead of lines to form the image, which is then color printed by applying colored inks directly to the copper plate for each impression. The use of colored inks, greens and browns to print the stems and leaves, and reds and pinks to print the flowers, create a more luminous print by eliminating the necessity to paint watercolor over a back inked image.
