Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A beautiful free-blown, translucent, pale-green glass vessel fragment set within a sunburst chain cage with a modern hammered brass back plate. The glass pendant is circular in form with a recessed face, a protruding tondo, and a flared rim. The fragment is secured to the brass plate with a single modern gold-filled chain, and a secondary modern gold-filled chain is secured to the brass backing with two small hoops and acts as the necklace strand. A beautiful example of wearable ancient art! Size (necklace): 17.25" L (43.8 cm); size (pendant): 1.875" W (4.8 cm).

Wearable as shown. Glass pendant is a fragment from a larger glass vessel. Glass component is ancient, and brass and gold-filled components are modern. Glass pendant has surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, small nicks along verso, and light surface roughness.
