Description
For your consideration are a lot of (3) miniature portraits of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, Marie of Prussia (Queen of Bavaria) & Saint Fabiola. The portraits of King Ludwig and Marie are housed in beautiful bone and inlaid brass frames and the paintings are both signed by the artist (looks to be signed "Stahl"). The oval images, as seen, measure 3 1/4" x 2 1/2". Framed, these portraits measure 5 3/4" x 4 3/4". The image of St. Fabiola is housed in the ornate bronze frame with a velvet hanger. St. Fabiola's image measures 4" x 2 3/4" while the framed measurement is 6" x 4 1/4". When hung, the portrait of Saint Fabiola is 14" in length.
King Ludwig II, whose mother was Queen Marie, ruled Bavaria from 1864-1886 and is perhaps known best for his military successes and architectural contributions to Bavaria. King Ludwig II's mother, Marie of Prussia (1825-1889), was loved equally by both the Protestant and Roman Catholic populations. A specific emphasis of her "great social engagement" was a reactivation of the Bavarian Women's Association, which took place on 18 December 1869 with the aid of her son, Ludwig II. Its aim was the care and support of soldiers wounded and injured in the field. The Bavarian Red Cross was officially founded as a result of the Bavarian Women's Association.
Saint Fabiola is pictured in Jean-Jacques Henner's painting from 1885 (as seen here) and is considered to be the patron saint of divorced people, difficult marriages, victims of abuse; adultery; unfaithfulness, widows and of the hospice movement.
Provenance: From a private collection in Fredericksburg, Texas.
