Dimensions of Cups (2): 3 7/8" handle to opposite rim ; 3 1/4"(h)

For your consideration is an important 5-piece Paris gilt porcelain tea set decorated with hand-painted historic scenes. The partial set includes a large pitcher with lip, smaller cream pitcher, open sugar bowl and (2) handled cups. Each piece in this gorgeous set depicts a 'chapter' in a larger story of a king or nobleman who is wounded by an arrow from a less noble man's crossbow. The scenes have been attributed to the wounding of King Richard I at the battle at the Castle of Chalus-Chabrol by Pierre Basile in 1199. The wound that King Richard I endured became infected and eventually led to his death. Each scene is masterfully painted with exquisite detail and ample parcel gilt flourishes.
