Description
EUGENE GRASSET (French, 1845-1917), "La Morphiomane (The morphine addict)," 1897, lithograph and pochoir, image: 16 x 12 inches, framed: 27.5 x 22.25 inches, pencil signed lower right. Eugene Grasset's depiction of a woman, apparently a prostitute, injecting morphine into her leg was emblematic of the time. The artist treats the shocking subject highly aesthetically, using the two-dimensional, ornamental means of representation of Japanese printing art and Art Nouveau. Unknown collector's stamp lower left. Magnificent print with border. Robertson 183.
