French artist Pierre Gatier's fascinating engraving depicting the French aircraft carrier Bearn - the only aircraft carrier produced by France until after World War II - in the sea with three planes in the air above and three more planes in the distance. During the 1920s, Bearn was converted from an incomplete Normandie-class battleship for the French Navy. This piece is not only an impressive work of art, it is also a visual record of military history. Pierre Gatier studied at the Beaux-Arts de Paris (National School of Fine Arts) and the Ecole Superieure d'Art et Design Toulon Provence Mediterranee (College of Art and Design Toulon Provence Mediterranee). See two other seascapes by Gatier at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. These include "Entrance to Boulogne" (accession number 59.23.44) and "French Sea Coast" (accession number 59.23.45).
