Near East, Persia, Seljuq Empire (Seljuk, Saljuq), Kashan, ca. 13th century CE. A beautiful pottery bowl, displaying impressively thin walls that span outwards to a broad, gently inward curving rim, all sitting upon a ring-form foot. Glazed in hues of navy, cyan, yellow, and white, the interior of the ancient vessel is skillfully hand-painted with elaborate decoration of a central floral motif surrounded by vegetal, geometric, and lattice designs, all encompassed by a stylized border that lies just below the rim. Alternatively, the exterior of the bowl is mostly bare, save for a horizontal band of vertical striations and petaloid patterns that encircles the rim. Repaired from several pieces with restoration and repainting. Restoration over most break lines, though some are still visible. Minor areas of loss along some break lines. Expected nicks, chips, and abrasions, commensurate with age. Otherwise, very nice with great remaining pigments. Sotheby's label on interior, as well as collection label and inscriptions on base.
