Description
MISCELLANEOUS, Bottle Stopper. Very rare antique marble bottle stopper. Pewter bottle stopper with a metal rod device with marble on the top of it to close the bottle. Stopper is pewter. Stamped on the neck "Pat'd Oct 13, 1863". Cork around the base (some loss). A metal (pewter) rod runs up the center of the stopper and has a marble at the top of it. The marble is a caged barber pole Solid Core Swirl. The marble in its own right is outstanding. Excellent symmetry, well made. The rod was embedded into the marble while the marble was hot. Overall height is 2-7/8". Width of the flange is 1-1/4". Marble is 11/16" diameter. Marble is MInt (9.9). Stunning. The patent is US but I am assuming that this was made in Germany. Interesting because it is the exact same design as Lot 13 in Auction #1123, but that one had a Patent Date of October 19, 1863. Mint (9.5).
