Biography: 1930 - 2011. He was born in Yorker, Glasgow, but both William Crozier‘s parents were from Co Antrim and his Irish links were always vital to him. Rejecting insular ideas of identity, he regarded himself as a European. In Dublin in the mid-1950s, he befriended Anthony Cronin among others. From the early 1980s, he and his wife, Katherine Crouan, established a base in West Cork and spent more and more time there. Prior to this, Crozier had been pursuing a line of highly figurative, symbolic painting. But he felt he had exhausted it possibilities. There were already hints that he had glimpsed another way forwards by turning to nature for inspiration. That finally happened in West Cork, where the landscape around Roaring Water Bay became an epic natural theatre for him. His intense, graphically bold style was ideally suited to the terrain, with its wild bursts of brilliant colour, vivid tonal contrasts and a dynamic sense of airy spaciousness. Crozier did much of the best work of his life in Cork, the work for which he remains celebrated.
