Catalog Note:
Generally working in a surrealist or magic realist mode, Ellen Lanyon was also sometimes grouped with the Chicago Imagists. This dreamlike work draws on motifs from the classical Greek epic, The Odyssey. In particular, seals are creatures associated with Proteus, the prophetic Old Man of the Sea, who revealed the whereabouts of Odysseus and other lost Trojan War heroes.
