Description
LIMOGES ENAMEL PLAQUE DEPICTING THE BETRAYAL OF CHRIST 16TH CENTURY polychrome enamel with traces of gilding (23cm high, 20cm wide) Footnote: Note: The plaque is likely to have been part of 37 plates depicting the Passion of Christ inspired by engravings by Albrecht Dürer. Scenes from the life and Passion of Christ had been amonst the earliest subjects to be depicted by the Limoges enamellers, beginning in the late fifteenth century. The theme was popularised by the Passion plays, which originated in medieval Germany and reached the height of their success in the fifteenth century. Dürer's engravings were an often used source for the enamellers in Limoges, and plaques with different variations of the theme are known. This points towards a range of artists and their individual interpretations of the source. Another example can be found in the Wallace Collection, London, collection number C596. Literature: Suzanne Higgott, 'The Wallace Collection. Catalogue of Glass and Limoges Painted Enamels', London 2011
