Description
Velvet and Silk Embroidered Cape ("Lembde"), Amhara People, Ethiopia, Early 20th C. Cape of velvet, cotton and silk worn by warriors and officials of the Emperor. Such capes were originally made from lion skins, hence the shape with long hanging lappets that are suggestive of a pelt. The use of skin was replaced by embroidered fabric as lions became more scarce. Similar example: https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/E_Af1974-11-12.
