Description
Orville Bulman Oil on Canvas - Patrole Original Orville Bulman oil on canvas dated 1971, featuring a party of warriors in tribal regalia with shields and spears raised. The scene is heightened by Bulman's use of movement with the flapping banners tied to the spears, the headdresses blown back, and the men in lockstep. Their regalia stands out with bright pinks, yellows, and oranges against the green foliage and the pale sky, highlighting the artist's use of color as well. A single figure breaks the fourth wall, with eyes planted squarely towards the viewer as the party marches on through the grass. The sun appears to be rising on an unseen horizon, with a blue sky broken at the bottom by a wash of yellow. Bulman was inspired in the 1950s by seeing photos of Haiti and subsequently spending months at a time in the countryside there. He admired the people and their culture, and in turn they inspired his whimsical paintings featuring fantastic scenes of mythical creatures, the jungle, and the people whom he imagined would live alongside them. Approximate size: 14" x 15.5" x 2" Approximate weight: 3 lbs
