Description
An early continental mahogany chest on frame, probably French late 18th century. The dome top dovetailed trunk having hand forged iron hardware including long strap hinges and an ornate hand forged iron escutcheon and hasp - the lock has been removed as well as the handles. The interior is hand painted with flowers and fluer-de-lis designs, and the underside of lid decorated with 2 painted hearts pierced by an arrow and sword. It is mounted on a case with 2 dovetailed drawers and turned feet. With the exception of an expansion hairline in domed lid, and the loss of handles and lock, it is in very good condition. Measures 44"W x 11 1/4"D x 35 3/4"H. Note the pierced hearts are symbolic of a lovesick person, in this case likely an immigrant's dower chest, being shipped to America in the 18th century.
