Description
Queen Ann mahogany tilt-top candlestand having a dish top with shaped edge mounted on rope twist and turned pedestal leading to cabriole legs and snake feet. Measures 19 1/2" x 20 1/2" (top) x 28"H. Top with expansion crack and repair to one foot, otherwise an exceptional candlestand. Provenance: This item was handed down to consignor's wife from either the Stotesbury family of Philadelphia - builder and part owner of JP Morgan in the 19th/20th century, or the Minturn families of NY - the consignor's wife's great great uncle was Col. Robert Shaw (the film "Glory") and her great great grandmother was Susanna Shaw Minturn (1839 - 1926) who gifted the land to NY that became part of Central Park. The Minturn family also owned the clipper ship "The Flying Cloud" and were leading merchants in NY City in the 19th/20th centuries.
