Large folk art horse on wheel toy, as found in the attic of a NYC estate. The horse is hand carved wood, jointed, and mounted on its original wooden platform in reddish paint with pin striping. The horse was originally covered in animal skin, probably deer skin, and shaped with straw wrapped in burlap around the horses body. It retains it's original horse hair tail and iron horseshoe mounted on its front right foot that is raised in the walking position. Condition - much of the animal skin/fur is missing, some of the straw is loose and the saddle area is wrapped in old newspaper to keep the straw together - the ears are also missing - no attempt has been made to clean or repair the horse and is being sold exactly as found. Very sculptural and structurally sound in a great form. Note also that the feet are mortised into the base platform with original iron wheels. Early to mid 19th century.
