Description
Western Europe, Etruscan Revival, ca. early 20th century CE. A beautiful sardonyx cameo of Athena in a high-quality 82.9% (equivalent to 19K+) gold brooch setting with filigree and gold granulation. At the center is the dark-umber stone that appears nearly black, with a bust of Athena in profile, a crested helmet upon her head and hair cascading to her shoulders. The stone is set in a gold bezel that is slightly raised above the rest of the tie or collar bar style setting, which is accented with a border of twisted filigree, clusters of granulations, and additional filigree work of diamond patterning. The tips of the bar arms are capped by larger granulated spheres, and framing the cameo are arched bands wrapped with twist rope filigree. The verso contains a pin finding and clasp, which are fully functional- an elegant example of the Etruscan Revival style that would have accented the collar of a shirt. Size (cameo): 0.65" L x 0.5" W (1.7 cm x 1.3 cm); (brooch setting): 1.72" L x 0.83" W (4.4 cm x 2.1 cm); gold quality: 82.9% (equivalent to 19K+); weight: 6.5 grams
