Item Details
Description
Inscribed (in Hebrew): "From the Zionists of Lodz to the President of the Zionist Executive Board Mr. Nachum Sokolow 7 Adar 5683 [1923]".

An extremely rare and historic pocket watch made of 14K gold, produced by the prestigious watch making firm Longines.

The highly-respected and innovative Longines firm was founded in Switzerland in 1832 by August Agassiz.

In 1889 the company registered its factory mark. The Logines logo – a winged hourglass – has remained unchanged until today. It is not only the first registered trademark in the history of Swiss wristwatches, but also the oldest valid trademark in the world.

The pocket watch before us is the "Grand Prix Paris 1900" model, made of 14K gold (marked), produced by EFCO Longines, Switzerland, ca. 1905. On the back of this beautiful timepiece is engraved a Hebrew inscription with great historical value: "From the Zionists of Lodz to the President of the Zionist Executive Board Mr. Nachum Sokolow 7 Adar 5683 [1923]".

Nachum Sokolow: 1859-1936, was a Zionist leader, poet, translator, author, pioneer of Hebrew journalism, president of the World Zionist Congress and World Zionist Organization and the Jewish Agency. He is considered the father of modern Hebrew journalism. He served as co-owner and editor of the important daily newspaper "HaTzfirah, " which was read by Haredim and Maskilim alike. Along with Chaim Weizmann, Sokolow was among the most prominent figures in the political activities against Britain that led to the Balfour Declaration. He fought hard and steadfastly for the establishment of the Hebrew language as the national language of the Jewish people.

Sokolow's writings had enormous impact on Hebrew readers of his time. In the words of Dr. David Lazar, recipient of the Sokolow Prize in 1960, "They did not read his words - they 'studied' them, as if it were a page of Gemara".

5 cm. (diam.). 64 gr. Marked.

An extremely rare and prestigious historical piece.
