Item Details
Description
Carlos Vasquez (Chile, b. 1931). "Situacion 1" oil on canvas, ca. 1960s. Signed on the lower right. A striking and quite sizeable painting by Chilean artist Carlos Vasquez. The composition is divided into three sections. Clockwise from left to right: a mesmerizing blue figure with an abstract, Cubist-inspired visage, a stylized body with folded arms and legs to one side; next, a glowing ovoid orb that contains a petite orb and incised markings conjuring constellations and/or astral bodies, all against a jet black ground; and finally, a pair of silhouetted abstract figures who sit together, facing one another, perhaps in conversation, one with an oversized open eye, the other without eyes, sitting before a scarlet orb, both against a brick red ground. Size: 39.25" L x 39.25" W (99.7 cm x 99.7 cm)

Carlos Vasquez studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes at la Universidad the Chile and the Institute of Hispanic Culture in Madrid, Spain. He was the founding Director of the Casa de la Cultura del Mineral El Teniente, in the city of Rancagua, Chile between 1971 and 1972. Between 1971 and 1975, he was Creative Director of the Decorative Arts Workshop "Del Pez" in Santiago, Chile and Bogota, Colombia. Vasquez is strongly connected to Spain, having lived there during his childhood between the years 1933 to 1939 and the years he shared with his wife, the Chilean painter Dolores Walker in the seventies. Between 1975 and 1977, both Vasquez and Walker were members of the group Galeria Unidad, Artistas Chilenos del Escorial and the working group of the Museo Salvador Allende in Madrid, Spain.

Carlos Chavez' honors and awards include: Silver Medal, Salon Nacional de Bellas Artes, Santiago, Chile (1958); Elizabeth Altamirano Uribe Prize, Salon Nacional de Bellas Artes. Santiago, Chile (1959); Honorable Mention, Salon Oficial, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile (1961); Painting Prize Chilena Nueva Santiago de Chile, 50 Aniversario ESSO Standard Oil Chile, Santiago, Chile (1962); Honorable Mention Concurso CRAV, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo, Universidad de Chile, Santiago, Chile (1967); 1st Prize for Painting, Salon de Verano, Vina del Mar, Chile (1968).
