1960s Adam Niemczyc Fresco - Girl From Siena
Item Details
Description
Adam Niemczyc (Polish, 1914-2009). "Girl From Siena" fresco, ca. 1960s. Signed "A.N." (inscribed in fresco) at lower left. A beautiful portrait by early modern Polish artist, Adam Niemczyc. Niemczyc presents an elegant woman, bust length, with her elongated form facing forward, donning a vermilion garment with a delineated bustier. She gazes ahead with an enchanting visage comprised of stylized features - ovoid eyes, severely arched, pencil-thin brows, a long slender nose, pursed full lips, and a pointy chin - all topped by a modern bob hairdo. A striking modern portrait that suggests the influence of Amedeo Modigliani in which Niemczyc ironically worked in fresco, a medium favored by during the Classical and Renaissance periods, to render an avant-garde image. Size: 26" L x 18" W (66 cm x 45.7 cm) Size of frame: 32.625" L x 24.625" W (82.9 cm x 62.5 cm)

The title of this piece - "Girl From Siena" - probably alludes to the noteworthy fresco paintings in Siena, especially at the Palazzo Publico which is covered in fresco paintings. For example, Ambrogio Lorenzetti's fresco cycle entitled, "The Allegory and Effects of Good and Bad Government" (1338-1339) adorns the Sala della Pace (Room of Peace).

Born in 1914, Adam Niemczyc was a Polish postwar and contemporary artist who studied at Jan Kazimierz University. Niemczyc stayed in Budapest during World War II, studied art, and graduated from the Academy in Krakow in 1948. Following this, he earned a doctorate in art history at the Jagiellonian University. In addition to being a visual artist who engaged in painting, graphic art, mural painting, and book illustration, Niemczyc was also a poet and novelist. Niemczyc exhibited in Poland starting in 1958 and also had numerous solo exhibitions abroad, including Galerie Zak in Paris, Cassel Gallery in London, and Bodley Gallery in New York.
