Artist Biography: Irene Rice Pereira (1902 - 1971) was a painter from the United States known for her dedication to Bauhaus principles and was a member of the American Abstract Artists. In 1935 she founded the Design Laboratory through the WPA (Works Progress Administration), a design school with similar aims as the Bauhaus. In keeping with the Bauhaus philosophies, Pereira's work is largely abstract and incorporates elements of technological imagery. Her work is in the collections of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
