Description
18th century AD. Contemporary plated counterfeit. Obv: profile bust with date below and CAROLUS IIII DEI GRATIA legend; with oval countermark. Rev: crowned arms between pillars with HISPAN ET IND REX o/M 8R F M legend for Mexico City mint. See S.3765A for details of genuine countermarked issues. 25.40 grams. Ex UK market. Many silver coins were counterfeited in the 18th-19th century period; usually plated over a base core, as this example; the damage to this example is likely to have been deliberate, after it was discovered to be a counterfeit. [No Reserve]

Very fine; pierced, flan bent and heavy edge knocks.
