Description
13th-14th century AD. A square bronze panel with decorative raised border, low-relief image of a nimbate saint on his stallion (Saint George? Saint Theodore?), holding a cross-topped spear and a pennon; the central figure surrounded by foliage. Cf. for the style of representation and the drapery of the figure the PAS WAW-2BADEE, a seal matrix from Gloucestershire. 325 grams, 83mm (3 1/4"). Acquired 1980s. Property of a Suffolk gentleman. The bronze plaque is possibly a die for the production of religious imagery. The identification of the cavalryman is difficult, due to the stylisation of the figure, although the nimbus around his head, the small flag on his spear and the cover of his horse points to a military saint.
