Item Details
Description
9th century AD. A copper-alloy strap end or horse harness mount with lanceolate body bearing a panel of geometric decoration, consisting of two areas of converging chevrons, a band of longitudinal lines below and a highly simplified animal's head terminal consisting of two chamfers forming the shape of the nose. Cf. similar strap-end in Leahy, K., Lewis, M., Finds Identified II, Dress Fittings & Ornaments, Coggeshall, 2020, p.188, PAS catalogue FAKL-AFFA4D, from Elloughton, Yorkshire. 3.58 grams, 39mm high (1 1/2"). Found near Horncastle, Lincolnshire, UK. From a Loughborough collection. The strap-end belongs to the Thomas' Class A Type 2. Like the Elloughton specimen, this strap end has the upper split end decorated with an incised St Andrew's cross and through it are two diameter rivet holes for the fastening. The incised geometric layout is typical of the period. [No Reserve]
