Description
These 10 Civil War soldier letters were written by 50 year-old Hiester H. Muhlenberg who joined Co. C, 42nd Penn. Vol. Militia at Reading, PA, to respond to Lee's invasion of Pennsylvania in 1863. The series of letters—written almost daily while serving in the militia—read almost like a diary, chronicling his movements and activities as a member of that regiment. During much of this time, the regiment was encamped two miles south of Hagerstown, Maryland, and his letters abound with information pertaining to that locality in the period immediately following the Battle of Gettysburg.
