Description
STANFORD, Edward (1827–1904). Stanford’s Library Map of South America, Constructed by A. Keith Johnston. London, 1864. Large hand–colored lithograph case map, dissected and laid on four sheets of linen, each part consisting of 20 sections, 80 total, measuring 1701 x 1600 mm, some offsetting. A HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF STANFORD’S LARGE FORMAT WALL MAP. In the early 1850s Edward Stanford commissioned Alexander Keith Johnston to prepare a set of large wall maps of each of the 6 continents: Europe; Australasia; Asia; Africa; North America; and South America. Johnston's wall maps, which Stanford titled “Library Maps” became one of the most enduring works of the period, issued continuously with updates well into the 20th Century.
