Item Details
Description
A very neat and tidy, small memorial sampler by Betsey Judson. Betsey stitched this sampler in Remembrance of Catharine Elizabeth Lewis. There is no indication of who Catharine might have been, a young friend or relative, or perhaps Betsey’s teacher. The sampler is dated September 7, 1830, when Betsey was 11. It includes a verse: “Mark my Polly how the roses emulate tthy damask cheek. How the bud its sweets discloses buds thy opening bloom bespeak.” The text is taken from an 18th century poem “To a Child of Five Years” by Nathaniel Cotton (1707-1788), an English physician and poet. There are also 4 renditions of the alphabet and 2 sets of number, including 1-21 across the very bottom. The sampler measures 9” square and is housed in a modern wooden frame (12” square). It is in very fine condition: clean without soiling, stains, tears or holes. The fine stitchwork is complete, although some of the lighter tan colors have faded. In a nice twist of respect for Catharine, Betsey stitched “When this you see Remember Catharine Elizabeth Lewis!” Usually, when that turn of phrase is used in samplers of this period, they read “When this. You see, Remember me!” Obviously, Catharine meant a lot to young Betsey.
