According to Joseph Cornet, these small masks were often incorporated in assemblies of various elements, including small calabashes containing magical substances (Cornet, 1972, pages 208-209)
The result acting as a fetish
Kifwebe Luba masks have a protective role against diseases, while those of Songye used to impress and police (for male masks) and celebrate power changes, burials or investitures (for female masks)
