Description
Jean Louis Forain (1852-1931, France), "'Similitudes", etching

image: 6 x 4", frame: 13 x 11"

Provenance: A Dallas, Texas collection

Forain was a French painter and printmaker born in Reims, France. As a teenager, he moved to Paris and befriended Edgar Degas, Paul Verlaine, and Arthur Rimbaud, the latter with whom he shared a squalid Paris apartment for a period of three months. In 1874, Forain's first submission to the Paris Salon was rejected. He eked out a living publishing cartoons in small satirical newspapers while Degas involved him in his environment of the opera and ballet, both of which became key subjects for Forain. After ten years, Forain's work "Le Buffet" was accepted in the 1884 Salon, along with "Le Veuf" ("The Widower") the following year. In 1887, French newspaper Le Figaro began publishing Forain's cartoons, and this collaboration would last thirty five years.
